Bikes on Wheels

The go-to spot for couriers, cycling activists and Market mavens—note the classic ’70s-era Huffy hanging from the ceiling—Kensington’s Bikes on Wheels does a brisk business in hybrid, touring and mountain bikes. The ratio of new to used bikes varies depending on the season, but 75 to 25 is common, with the vast majority of models by Bianchi, Marinoni and Norco. Exclusive to the store are German Biria three-speed city bikes ($499) and Pac courier bags ($120–$300), handmade on Manitoulin Island. Custom-built conversions (new wheels and fixed-gear systems put on recycled frames) are another draw, as is the Park Tool School, bicycle repair courses ($150) divided into beginners’ and advanced levels. For those a little less DIY inclined, basic tune-ups start at $50. Sales occur three times a year—fall, spring and mid-summer—with rides marked down as much as 50 per cent.
