With a tangle of beaters out front and the retail space occupied primarily by its repair operation, the five-year-old Bike Joint feels less like a bike shop than a cycling nut’s garage. Rightfully so: co-owners Brad Annis and Derek Chadbourne are both true bike activists, and their mandate is to provide thorough, expert service to couriers and commuters alike. In other words, they’d rather sell you a $35 tune-up (one of the cheapest in the city) than a shiny new $3,500 roadster. Used bikes—the only kind they carry in-store—start at $100 and there’s also a large variety of parts (and a smaller selection of helmets and locks), which can be found in and around the staff’s bags of laundry and Critical Mass memorabilia.
