Joe Rockhead's

White walls studded with ropes and candy-coloured grips soar toward 32-foot ceilings, in a cavern-like setting that looks like a stark Star Trek set. Canada’s first indoor climbing gym, Rockhead’s offers 22,000 square feet of artificial rock surface, including top-rope routes and two bouldering areas. A three-hour beginners’ lesson, involving one hour of instruction and two of guided practice, gives you the knowledge to tackle any of the top-rope routes. An advanced course in climbing with bolted leads covers efficient climbing, dogging, resting and how to fall safely. Kids age six and older can learn safety, balance, co-ordination and other basic climbing skills in a two-hour group session.

How much:
$15, annual membership $525, lessons $35–$155, private instruction from $50 per hour.
