Beginners work out in the same large, old-fashioned gym space as professionals and champions, providing a great incentive to learn the ropes. Anyone can use the 36-year-old club for its weights and other equipment, but amateur boxers are advised to take the introductory TechBox course. The 16-hour course teaches the basics of no-touch boxing—the jargon, the skills—and gives you the moves you’ll need to navigate the club’s conditioning classes, which typically involve circuit training, skipping, various exercises and bag work. Competitive types may move on to an advanced TechBox course, touch boxing and then, eventually, to actual sparring—but for most it’s a no-contact sport.
How much:
10-week TechBox classes $200, gym fee $20–$40 (not required for classes), other classes $10.
