Once dubbed “Mister Glitter” for his society clientele, Gage does Norman Jewison, Peter Munk, Dalton McGuinty, Catherine Nugent and Belinda Stronach. In business for almost 40 years, he knows everyone and knows how to keep them coming back. “I’m fairly genial and also discreet,” he says. Plus, his salon is both private and intimate. Outside, it’s all ivy, French doors and Second Empire architecture. Inside, it’s a blaze of warm yellow walls, contemporary art, and bold black and white draperies. Gage himself works upstairs in a front-of-house sanctuary that’s luxurious with light and cascading piles of fashion mags. He charges $130, but prefers to work on interesting people. There are five other stylists (most of whom charge $55–$65); hair extensions start at $300.
