Ah, Jie Matar. When his Yorkville salon closed, few doubted that the master of self-promotion (known for speaking about himself in the third person) would rise again. And so he has, but this time as the creative director, not the owner of a new, very private mini-salon. With a silent partner and an even-more-silent location—there isn’t a sign and you have to ring a bell for entry—186 Davenport aims to be the ultimate in luxe discretion. Bottles of water on silver trays are served to clients in a lovely, chandeliered two-floor operation reminiscent of a 1930s Parisian hotel. Prices are still in the Jie-osphere, naturally: women’s cuts start at $400, a blow-dry and style at $200. Men can be touched by the hand of Jie for less—$150 for a cut. Colour starts at $85 for one tone; highlights start at $150.
