Founded by Paul Sinclaire and Joseph Mimran, this Toronto-based line created a frenzy among fashion editors for its quality basics, and earned a devoted following at such retail meccas as Sak’s. But, until recently, it wasn’t available in Hogtown. In January 2006, Sinclaire opened his studio as a large, high-ceilinged retail emporium. With celeb fans ranging from Oprah to Gwen Stefani, it’s obvious the clothes have an ageless appeal. (In fact, many items nod to star style-setters; a trench takes its name from the Catherine Deneuve classic Belle de Jour.) Customers range from uptown ladies who view the clothing—at $695 for a coat, $225 for a sweater and $265 for pants—as affordable basics, to downtowners looking for quality investment pieces. The style is timeless, but subtle plays on proportion and fabric—a raincoat gets updated in a leopard print—ensure it’s never dull.
