With walls of canvas and bamboo, this shop is home to all manner of African exotica: “batonga” stools made from sausage trees; hand-painted pottery from Zimbabwe; and decorative beaded giraffes. Featuring smiley-faced rhinos and giraffes, the latter are the Equatorial equivalent of Beatrix Potter. There’s also an array of Kenyan jewellery you’d be hard pressed to find this side of Kilimanjaro: bracelets and necklaces are made of shell, bone, glass and beads. The shop’s owners, Jennifer and Michael Haines, certainly have the right credentials: they met on a Zimbabwean safari (he was her guide), and ran two stores in Victoria Falls before opening this one. In fact, if you would like to plan a trip to the Serengeti while you browse, Michael Haines is also a travel agent and a safari guide, and runs Safari & Company at the back of the store.
