The atmosphere at Peach Berserk is cheerfully chaotic. Watch as employees silkscreen fabric at the back, pierced undergrads paw the bright underwear (country and western–themed numbers feature the saying “Yer Cheatin’ Heart,” $19) and owner Kingi Carpenter teaches screen printing classes. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a sleepover; Carpenter’s designs exude the same playful vibe. Customers can also choose a print, colour and fit, and have a garment custom made. Tangerine silk skirts have a ’50s flair; sexy corset dresses ($395) show off cleavage and have uneven hems for a raw look. Carpenter’s latest craze is alterna-wedding dresses in every colour of silk. Also popular are customized silk-screen prints for weddings. Couples bring in designs—poems or pictures, for instance—to be printed onto napkins, linens and even wedding gowns.
