Fresh Collective

Whatever you do, don’t call it a store. “We’re a collective,” explains one of the handful of local designers who spend one day per week managing the cozy five-year-old Queen West spot in exchange for space to display their original creations. Laura-Jean Bernhardson (a.k.a., Laura-Jean the Knitting Queen) is the fashionable force who conceived of a boutique where budding Toronto designers could gain wider exposure. Part of her recipe for success is quality over quantity when it comes to co-owners. All of the handmade clothing and accessories share the same earthy–meets–casually chic characteristics. Fresh Baked Goods, Bernhardson’s own line of flashy hand-knits and printed cotton dresses, is all about making a statement. In other words, this is not the place to buy basics or yet another little black dress. It is the place to pick up a hand-painted domino pendant by jewellery creator Odd Bird ($26–$36), a flirty summer skirt by Nude Clothes ($118), and adorably sassy days-of-the-week undies by Candi Factory ($20 each).
