Last year’s dramatic reno, echoed in Escada boutiques worldwide, suggests a new energy emerging from this well-respected German brand. Creative director Damiano Biella has contemporized the collections while also focusing on super-luxe materials (pleating moulded from scrunched newsprint) and fancy finery in order to justify the steep price tags (cashmere top coat, $4,990; boots, $1,200–$1,500). In an environment where a glass of Veuve is de rigueur, evening dresses go down easy at $2,000 to $7,000. On the first floor, Escada Sport is more accessible; embellished cotton tanks go for $110 and sprightly day dresses for $850. The Laurel line is an in-store gem, offering indispensable leather jackets ($1,490) and evening essentials ($400–$2,000).
