The Public Butter

  • 1290 Queen St. W. (at Dufferin)
  • 416-535-4343

Like its sister store, Black Market on Queen West, this Parkdale outpost devotes half of its business to vintage frocks and leather jackets and the other half to a bustling silkscreen operation. The latter turns out T-shirts and tuques (from $13) emblazoned with iconic images: the face of Edgar Allan Poe, say. Crammed between the racks—where you might find a classic Burberry trench ($80) or a Woolrich lumberjacket ($25)—are retro tchotchkes, usually of a ’70s vintage. Cozy and comforting, it’s all in keeping with the shop’s name, an allusion, according to the owners, to “a sort of creamy goodness for the masses.”
