“I don’t want to copy anyone,” says Arlene Pastor, co-owner of this five-year-old Distillery must-stop for fussy fashion lovers with a social conscience. Which makes her store perfect for those who want what no one else has, including such jewellery as True Religion’s Babakul collection, which focuses on yellow semi-precious and precious stones paired with white gold ($124–$1,000), and clothes and sneakers by Alife. Pastor is focused on providing goods that are traded fairly and aren’t soaked in pesticides—the store stocks such organic lines as cashmere from Gilded Age, and cotton Ts and tanks from Japan’s Vroom and Voeu. Christina Kim’s Dosa line provides work for women in small villages in India and Africa; their hand-spun silk doesn’t come cheap, but neither does good karma.
