Originating as a New York apothecary in 1851, this high-quality skin care mecca still displays evidence of its pharmaceutical roots. Lotions and potions are neatly arranged in rows and displayed in dark wood cabinets. For the metro man, there is a line of shaving and skin care essentials. Ultimate Strength Hand Salve ($17.50–$27) was conceived to soothe the rough hands of working men but has evolved to become a staple in many purses and desk drawers. Other enduring classics include Lip Balm #1 ($8) and Ultra Facial Moisturizer (125 mL, $31.50). The infamous waiting list for Abyssine Cream ($55) is a thing of the past—there is now enough to meet demand (although the relaunched sunscreen-added Abyssine Cream has now earned a waiting list of its own).
