Few long-standing brands can thrive within the tension between old and new, but this famed 153-year-old French design house is as much about preserving its traditional image—with its hard-cased trunks for the ruling elite—as it is about youth. Notice the past and present echoed on Scarlett Johansson’s Vermeer face as it appears in Louis Vuitton’s recent ad campaign. In Toronto for 25 years, the retail arm of the company shines in a more-recently built radiant jewel box on Bloor, consisting of 6,000 square feet and two storeys of apparel, footwear, leather wares and jewels. The sparkliest goods include the pavé diamond Tambour 18 Chamallow watch ($22,100), with a ring of white diamonds embedded around the face and a pink lizard-skin band. The most mom-friendly items include the Neverfull bag ($575–$665), a simple, monogrammed bucket-shaped tote that fills up and up; the pattern of the lining echoes that of LV’s first travel trunks.
