It may be the maple syrup to Tiffany & Co.’s royal jelly but, in fact, that very distinction marks its place in many a beating nationalist heart. The Toronto flagship at Bay and Bloor houses two floors of cultured pearls, chronograph watches, diamond solitaires mined in Northern Canada, vintage estate jewellery, and Royal Doulton’s Bunnykins collection. There’s also silverware and fine writing instruments busily being etched for winners of yacht club regattas or bank managers receiving long-time service awards. The new Birks Boutique Collection of wallets, cosmetic cases, jewellery rolls, belts, key chains, travel portfolios and handbags range from $125 to $1,150. Hand-stitched in Italy, with 18-karat-gold-plated hardware, the jacquard’s signature mark is unmistakable: look for the pattern of the letter B.
