The Trinity Bellwoods shop still acts primarily as a showcase for owner Nicole van der Oord’s vinyl bags, which come in a multiplicity of colours and sizes. A popular tote bag with long, adjustable straps, a vinyl leaf motif and chenille panels in black or chestnut is $120. Since moving east and gaining some space, Fleurtje has also become a one-stop shop for Canadian fashion and accessories. There are plenty of little trinkets for presents, such as affordable Angel Claire jewellery with semi-precious stones (starting at $30), resin-and-wire creations by Beadle, and necklaces made with kimono fabric on sterling silver frames by Marmalade ($58–$70). Local textile artist Yasmine Louis offers T-shirts and bags adorned with urban graphics offset by poignant observations on life (one features a photo of the TTC with the words “I found the perfect seat on the subway. I felt lucky so I didn’t get off.”), while Vancouver’s Parade offers organic cotton goodies that are perfect for babies. A veritable treasure trove of offerings from the True North, come here for denim, jewelry, woollens and knits, all made in Canada.
