It’s so very Canadian: though she’s been designing jewellery for 20 years, Experimetal’s Anne Sportun is better known south of the border than in her hometown. In fact, she’s something of a superstar in the world of gems and precious metals. Her understated contemporary pieces are sold at chi-chi boutiques from Boston to L.A., and her work is a favourite of Robert Redford. Organic shapes and asymmetrical forms are a common theme: a necklace of rainbow-hued sapphire briolettes is linked with gold wire ($2,155); pavé diamonds twinkle in a loosely interpreted leaf-shaped earring ($1,210).But it’s rings that really set hearts aflutter: 32 channel-set diamonds around an open circle ($2,530) is a favourite of modern brides; a checkerboard-cut prehnite ring ($2,100); and a gold band dotted with blue and green diamonds ($2,970) are colourful stunners.
