A throwback to the days of inkwells and quill pens, this red-brick Victorian schoolhouse—standing since 1848—is long on old-fashioned charm. Enoch Turner, a brewer, opened it as Toronto’s first free school. True to their humble roots, rooms are simply decorated. Wedding ceremonies are commonplace in the schoolroom (complete with chalkboards, a 19th-century wall clock and a dated map of Canada), where 100 guests can squeeze into old-style wooden desks. Gothic windows, an arch-beamed ceiling and a baby grand piano lend the West Hall (150 for cocktails, dinner and dancing) period charm. Come Christmas, the place is decked out in Victorian holiday decor.
