Built in 1891 for the anglophile St. George’s Society, this eccentric brick and stone pile just north of the Eaton Centre is a little taste of old WASP Toronto. The Group of Seven hung out here (J. E. H. MacDonald did the club’s crest) and Vincent Massey was an early club president. Now its quaint, centrally located spaces—next to the Delta Chelsea hotel, close to the subway—are open to everyone. The most popular area is the Gothic Great Hall. Equipped with high, timbered ceilings, massive stained glass windows, several coats of arms, a huge stone fireplace and even a choir loft, it seats 112 and adjoins a small bar-lounge adorned with old club paraphernalia. Upstairs on the third floor, the light- and art-filled Artists’ Studio hosts receptions for 50 to 60 people and is a very popular space for corporate brain-storming. A smaller boardroom overlooking Elm Street seats 25 and suits corporate meetings and private dinners.
