From invitations that feature silver dot–embellished paper imported from India to notebooks stylishly covered with vintage wallpaper, there’s not a dull item in the place. The brainchild of former fashion and textile merchandisers (MiMa is an amalgamation of their middle names), this small Corktown outfit custom makes most of its cards, invitations and personal stationery, and caters to tastes ranging from colourfully funky graphics to sleekly neutral uptown polish. Invitations start at $6 each for a four-piece package; many feature intricate hand detailing or such embellishments as metallic leaves. But co-owner Lidia Oliveira stresses that although their cards are handmade, “they’re not crafty. They’re very clean, very crisp.” More and more customers are asking for pocket-style invites with room for neatly packed inserts—often matching maps, directions and event schedules. “We like to make it all a package,” says Oliveira. Other trends include moving notes—cards to send to friends and colleagues with your new contact info. All are printed on carefully selected, sumptuously thick stock. While new customers usually come in for an initial meeting to discuss their vision, repeat clients often phone in orders. Expect a line of MiMa stationery in stores later this year, including sets of holiday cards printed in metallics.
