Shallow Groove Lounge

If College Street’s cool clubs are starting to grate, you don’t have to look far for an alternative. This basement lounge, open since 1999, is a back-to-basics mainstay of the strip. As a proper lounge should, it offers plenty of seating and decent two-ounce martinis (Soho Lychee $10, cosmo $9, raspberry $9) served at three bars. The easygoing clientele skews toward the lower end of the 23-plus age requirement; despite the no-sports-attire dress code, most are casually clad. The vibe is similarly low-key. Groups of chatting friends fill the dance floor when a familiar hip-hop, dance or Top 40 tune is played—which is often. Cover $5 Friday, $10 Saturday; free before 10 p.m.
