Now that Leslieville is trendy, the Queen West and Church Street crowds are crossing the Don River to hang out on Queen East. Velvet is a lively destination with bucketfuls of character; there are times when it feels as though you’ve crashed a ’70s swingers’ party, from the fashion (gold chains, feathered haircuts) to the saucy shenanigans of the patrons. Booths line both sides of the room; a pool table challenges those sober enough to shoot some stick. The service is almost motherly, and there’s an odd dash of Coronation Street about the place. Classic homemade pub grub (cod and fries, or meat loaf with mushroom gravy and mashed potatoes) hits the spot.
