Now that Leslieville is getting trendy, the Queen West and Church Street crowds are crossing the Don River to hang out on Queen East. And Velvet is a lively destination. This friendly neighbourhood pub is a down-to-earth alternative to Kubo’s sake martinis and Barrio’s rich tapas. It’s got bucketfuls of character; there are times when it feels as though you’ve crashed a ’70s swingers party, from the fashion (gold chains, feathered haircuts) to the saucy shenanigans of the patrons. Cozy booths line both sides of the room; a pool table challenges those sober enough to shoot some stick. The service is almost motherly, and there’s a dash of Coronation Street about the place. Classic pub grub (Guinness-battered cod and fries, say) hits the spot.
