Eclectic doesn’t begin to describe this Queen West bar. On the covered patio, sparkly red vinyl is combined with fuchsia leopard print, bamboo-covered walls and Japanese umbrellas; a stoplight hangs from the garish purple storefront. But unlike other bars on the strip, this decorative mishmash doesn’t look as though it was manufactured by high-end designers. On the contrary: it’s a comfortable home for genuinely impoverished artsy types, who get drunk on the cheap with $4.95 pints of six local microbrews, $17 pitchers or, for the ironically inclined, bottles of Labatt 50 ($3.65). The food is a slight step up from pub fare: an asiago chicken sandwich comes with caesar, garden or seven-grain vegetable salad for $8.75. Nothing fancy, but you’ll find good value, with most entrées less than $10. Hot indie music blares in the background—don’t dare to admit that you don’t know the name of the band.
