The Social

The decor consists of a long limestone bar, rough brick walls and a concrete floor. There are no frills here, just sassy bar staff and a “Welfare” sign emblazoned across the walls—actually an art piece officially titled “Welfare Allegory for the Death of Parkdale (As We Know It).” At 11 p.m., the bar turns into a club as the disco ball starts to spin and the tunes are cranked up. A mishmash of furniture mimics the crowd, which is a bit of everything, from Ukrainian ballerinas to strange men with handlebar moustaches. Neighbourhood impresarios Jesse Girard, Chris Watson and Richard Lambert have won over the art crowd—music darlings Feist, M.I.A., Franz Ferdinand and Johnny Knoxville have been known to hang out here, too. The bar receipts sum it up best: “Get social or get lost.”
