A welcome respite from the thumping clubs nearby, this cozy basement pub recalls a small, European drinking hole. Exposed brick, stone and a dimly lit atmosphere have just the right effect. Informative barkeeps present a beer menu that weighs as much as an early Hemingway manuscript; more than 250 brews are available, along with seasonal specials. The selection ranges from local microbrews—Nickel Brook Apple Pilsner ($6.75) refreshes on a humid evening—to the champagne of Belgian beers, Chimay Premier ($21.75), which evokes memories of a different era. Wafts of oysters, the specialty, bombard the senses as one enters the bar. Ambient blues and jazz make conversation easy.
