An island of chic in the tourist quarter, the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel has a clean, modern lobby and a similarly stylish bar. Despite lofty ceilings and even loftier chairs, it has an atmosphere that is, if not exactly intimate, at least cozy enough to allow you to hear your neighbour’s cellphone conversation (which will likely be about mergers, acquisitions and the like). Expect jazzy beats and elaborate drink garnishes. Be warned, though: the luxury of a boutique hotel bar comes with matching prices—champagne drinks run to $22 per slim flute.
