Not particularly wild or exotic, this north Toronto hangout is nonetheless one of the most congenial bars on Avenue Road. On the second floor, tribal wall paintings are a nod to the bar’s name; on the main floor, where an older crowd comes for drinks and eats, menu items include blackened ahi tuna ($11). Salads, pizzas and other mains are washed down with 10 wines by the glass ($6.50–$9), 11 single malts (including an 18-year-old Glenlivet, $9) and 10 specialty coffees ($5). Jazz music is soft enough for conversation (except when it’s live, on Tuesday night) and the TV above the bar is largely ignored. It’s louder upstairs, where 30-somethings take advantage of six billiard tables and two large TVs. In summer months, the patio is among the most popular in the neighbourhood, especially for weekend brunch.
