On sleepy Harbord, The Roxton is refreshingly unpretentious and low-key. From the outside, the place looks like a seedy booze can–strip club (special touches include neon diamonds decorating the outer wall). Inside, however, the bar is a cozy refuge for scene-weary locals who prefer pints of Labatt 50 ($5.50) to choco-tinis. The decor is eclectic: blue-and-cocoa-coloured walls are adorned with the front grille of a Bentley, a replica of a Goya nude, and crimson brandy snifters doubling as candle holders. Lively conversation accompanies the wails of Bob Dylan, Crooked Fingers, et al. On weeknights, near-capacity crowds fill the 30 spots on chairs, stools and benches, with smokers spilling onto the patio.
