The Rex Hotel Jazz & Blues Bar

There was a time when the Rex was—why mince words?—a dive. Then it got rhythm (it opened as a rooming house in the early 1800s and became a jazz bar in the 1980s). Today it features 19 live jazz performances weekly, including such long-time local heroes as Juno-winning sax player Mike Murley. Plus, the Rex likes a good time: check out spirited weekend afternoon matinées for a break from the over-hipped Queen West drag. The room itself stays true to basics, with mahogany wainscotting, an oak bar and stained glass windows, with quaffers of the 12 varieties of draft beers scattered throughout. Cover up to $9; most shows pay-what-you-can.
