Going for a drink at The Press Club is the next best thing to sipping mojitos with Hemingway or guzzling G&Ts with Graham Greene. Its habitués are more likely to be of the grant-grubbing variety, but they’ve got the drunken writer shtick down pat. The atmosphere hovers somewhere between a fin de siècle salon and a cinematic hang-out for foreign correspondents (plants and an old-fashioned fan provide a tropical frisson). Art deco touches include gilt mirrors, upholstered furniture and old-school poster art (but don’t look up: the gold spray-painted ceiling doesn’t quite achieve the desired pressed-tin effect). Scribes and their muses can sip on seven drafts, including Black Oak Pale Ale, Denison’s and Amsterdam Dutch Amber, or choose from 45 bottled beers. Live musicians frequently crowd the front, playing everything from Celtic music to jazz to bluegrass.
