George’s Play

  • 504 Church St. (at Alexander St.) View on map »

Proving the power of niche marketing, Play has made a place for itself on the notoriously homogenous Church Street strip by playing all the angles: bingo in the afternoon, a she-male soirée hosted by local artiste Chris Edwards on Wednesday, and a gathering of the Latin clans on the weekend. It gets lots of hips swivelling—especially when the trumpets blare and the drag queens play to the crowd—with Spanish and Mexican salsa and other up-tempo music. Basically a big, beige box jazzed up by touches of kitsch (a mirror ball, a painted Greek torso) and a lot of libido, the bar is all about energy.
