George’s Play

Proving the power of niche marketing, Play has made a place for itself on the notoriously homogeneous Church Street strip by playing all the angles: bingo in the afternoon, a she-male soirée hosted by local artist Chris Edwards on Wednesdays, and a gathering of the Latin clans on weekends. It gets lots of hips swivelling—especially when the trumpets blare and the drag queens play to the crowd—with Spanish and Mexican salsa and other uptempo music. Basically a big, beige box jazzed up by touches of kitsch and a lot of libido, the bar is all about energy.
