Before College Street becomes the artfully aesthetic paradise that is Little Italy, there is College and Bathurst, an intersection marked for decades by the 7-Eleven at Spadina, Sneaky Dee’s, and not much else of note. A relative newcomer, Nirvana’s massive space, previously occupied by KOS Bar and Grill and Picadilly before that, looks like the inside of an upscale travellers’ hostel, with an appealingly eclectic mix of furniture and knickknacks from every corner of the world. The tunes change from night to night (although indie rock and classic albums that hipsters can enjoy with irony are more common than Top 40), but with shockingly inexpensive beer and cocktails, it’s likely that music isn’t the primary draw.
