The gastro-pub—a British concept—has been slow to catch on in North America, but this venerable Hogg’s Hollow tavern brings the concept alive. The main floor offers a sleek pub atmosphere—brown leather chairs, smart upholstered booths and elegant lighting. Customers still knock back pints, but the new crowd orders cocktails, too. The hungry flock to the elegant upstairs dining room, which specializes in seafood and aged steaks ($26–$37); the wine list should be applauded for its range of prices and tastes (glasses $6–$13.50; bottles $22.50–$300). Barflies stick to the ground floor’s oyster lounge, where buttery Kumamotos ($2.50–$4.25) are served at the open-concept bivalve bar. Other casual fare on offer includes four-cheese quesadillas ($13) and Angus burgers ($14). In warmer months, the patio attracts a well-heeled crowd.
