A cheery hive of a room with 18-foot ceilings, red and yellow walls and an unimpeded view of the brew tanks, this Distillery District destination is the public face of east Toronto’s most famous brewery. It offers all the classic Mill Street lines—Balzac’s Coffee Porter and the award-winning Tankhouse Ale—plus some cute and tasty martinis (peach cosmo, candy apple, $8.50 each) for the beer-intolerant. There’s also a long list of single malts ($6–$20) that includes a 17-year-old Macallan. Waitresses in schoolgirl uniforms patrol the floor with friendly efficiency. An attractive but relaxed crowd, mostly sporting jeans, rugger shirts and baseball caps, floods out onto two huge patios in summer and huddles in dark wood booths beneath giant flat-screen TVs in winter. There are specials every day of the week, including wings on Tuesdays. The pre-theatre dining rush can make for long waits.
