In the late afternoon, happy hour prices draw a healthy TGIF crowd that loves cheap pints ($3.91) and bar shots (from $3.91). But the real appeal of the Maddy—a labyrinth of three connected Victorian houses—becomes clear after sunset: if you’re looking to score, you’re in good company, especially Thursday to Saturday nights, when frisky university students descend. (On these nights, patrons must be over 21 to enter after 11 p.m.) But as meat markets go, it’s a handsome one: etched glass windows, worn red velvet booths, framed portraits of equestrian heroes, and 20 types of beer on tap, served by wisecracking staff. Pool tables and dartboards abound—all the better to entertain the frat boys.
