The bar pickings may be slim at Bathurst and Bloor, but for night owls, Insomnia is a winner by more than just default, balancing neighbourly service with a hip, laid-back vibe. Although the decor is simple (exposed brick, twinkle lights), the drink list is anything but basic. There are more than 40 martinis ($7–$10.50; on Thursday, five varieties are $4.50 and the rest are $1 off), including the beloved champagne martini (Skyy vodka, Alizé Red Passion, grapefruit and cranberry juices, and a splash of champagne). During the week, students cluster in the back room to quaff pints and bottles; on Friday and Saturday, local Annexites flirt at the long bar or chat at one of the front room’s tightly packed tables. There are more than 200 types of liquors and liqueurs.
