Like a Canadian version of Austin City Limits, Hugh’s Room has quietly become the place to hear excellent roots, folk and world music (not to mention jazz, blues and poetry readings) in Toronto. Tiered seating, with some tables stageside, lends a sense of occasion, creating a dinner theatre–meets–acoustic music ambience. (And indeed, the best way to make sure you get a table is to reserve for pre-performance dining. Happily, the food is a cut well above pub grub, though it is priced accordingly.) Performers ranging from Loudon Wainwright III to Jane Siberry to Buffy Sainte-Marie have graced Hugh’s small stage, and the room is also a favourite venue for CD release parties. Cover $7–$35.
