Easy does it at Hemingway’s, an attitude-free oasis in pricey Yorkville. The decor overhaul has been described as “Belgian bistro meets New Zealand”: modern, with dark woods, brass and high-top tables. Gas heaters add a warm glow during the winter months, as does the hearty dinner menu (try the New Zealand spring lamb). By contrast, the third-floor patio, which is enclosed in winter, is done up like a tropical resort, featuring lush greenery and artificial mist. But the key to the resto-bar’s longevity isn’t the decor, the star sightings (Eric McCormack, Russell Crowe) or the drinks (24 draft beers and a superb wine list). It’s the playful atmosphere, courtesy of Kiwi owner Martin McSkimming, who’s decorated the place with paraphernalia from down under. On special occasions (such as Anzac Day and New Zealand Day), the Maori haka is performed; it’s a war dance, but we’re betting it’s a lot of fun.
