The Dakota Tavern

This honky-tonk hot spot has more in common with the dearly departed stalwart the Matador than most of the joints on Ossington’s nouveau hip strip. The basement location includes authentic touches such as barnboard walls and bar stools fashioned from barrels. Those not entirely comfortable with the thought of a hayseed hoedown needn’t worry—while cowboy boots are in ample supply on the dance floor, 10-gallon hats are left to the boys in the band. The Dakota fills up on weekends, thanks to performances by indie acts, so get there early if you’re planning a (relatively) peaceful pint. This is not the place for fancy, super-sweet cocktails. Instead, simple favourites—such as a mean mint julep ($7.50)—are served sans flourish. Cover $5 Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
