Originally a Polish butcher shop, Czehoski once drew lineups for its kielbasa. These days, the three-storey hot spot attracts a different sort of crowd. The elaborate revamp is long on detail: pressed-tin ceilings, coffee-stained floors and under-bar purse hooks; in the bathrooms, there are (bless ’em) five rolls of paper per stall. In front, the effortlessly trendy grace the teal leather booths, sipping gin classics (gimlet $12) that recall a time when city officials reportedly drank and gambled in the basement. Dates often start upstairs—over some of eastern Europe’s best suds, such as Poland’s Zywiec lager ($7.25)—or on the popular rooftop patio.
