Two of three co-owners are long-time veterans of the decorating business. Not that that comes as much of a shock upon entering this almost too-gorgeous-to-be-a-bar space. Tin ceilings, luxe leather couches and blond brick walls are among the less obvious trimmings, while vintage communist propaganda posters and Asian-inspired art give the space its cheeky theme. Just don’t read too much into a left-leaning decor: the crowd here is more blazer and denim than hammer and sickle. A mix of locals and curious imports from the west side populate the many lamp-lit tables (from Vietnam), while a back room proves ideal for private gatherings. Third co-owner Ryan McVittie is something of a mad mixologist. His martini menu includes original blends (the Café Comrade martini mixes fresh-brewed espresso with organic cream, Galliano, crème de cacao and vodka, $9) as well as a few favourites, such as the grasshopper and manhattan ($9 each).
