Opened early last September, this Cabbagetown bar lends a soupçon of refinement to the Parliament strip’s usual mix of pubs and nail salons. The intimate 50-person spot—formerly home to a sandwich shop—has been renovated by the new owners, husband and wife team John and Laila Jay. It now houses a charming, quietly elegant assortment of wing chairs, chandeliers and large canvases. Simplicity is the key word here: three beers on tap (Steam Whistle, Red Leaf and Wellington) and a handful in bottles (Stella and Labatt 50 among them), as well as a minimal menu (cheese plates, pâté, edamame). Wines and scotches get more play, with eight reds and seven whites by the glass, and 12 single malts up for grabs. The inviting staff also presides over a candlelit sitting room in the back, decorated with divans, bookshelves and old-fashioned portraits of fictional family members.
