A diamond in the rough, Ciros is worth the trek to downtrodden Lansdowne Avenue. Despite the low-key atmosphere, it’s one of the city’s top beer destinations, with 120 to 150 varieties on offer. Belgian brews are the house specialty: sweet, potent Rochefort 8 ($10.25) is triple-fermented for an alcohol content of 9.2 per cent; Scaldis, a sweet amber, has a whopping 12 per cent. Quebec’s Unibroue also offers heady concoctions: try 750-millilitre bottles of nine per cent La Fin du Monde ($7.25) and Maudite ($7.25). For a tamer but more exotic drink, sample Sinha, a Sri Lankan stout ($7.75); for pure decadence, down a shot of absinthe ($11). The menu is nothing if not eclectic, and dishes are decidedly hybrid. For example, Shanghai Delight is a curried noodle dish with tomato-and-almond pesto ($10), and tzatziki comes with homemade cornbread ($7).
