When the late cartoonist Ben Wicks opened this subterranean pub in 1980, it became a neighbourhood favourite. Some of the patrons who walked through the doors all those years ago still lean on the dusky oak bar, swilling suds. Although Wicks sold the place in 1984, the bar still bears his stamp—a number of his original works adorn the walls. But other things have changed. Two years ago, one side of the pub was converted into the Left Door, a shabby-chic dining room complete with red vinyl seats, funky retro lamps and art exhibitions. Friendly staff serve up Guinness-battered fish with hand-cut chips ($10), and wild boar sausage ($14). There’s a decent selection of beers and a good little wine list; bottles are offered for about $10 above cost.
