The Ben Wicks

When the late cartoonist Ben Wicks opened this subterranean pub in 1980, it became a neighbourhood favourite. Some of the patrons who walked through the doors three decades ago still lean on the oak bar, swilling suds. Two years ago, one side of the pub was converted into the Left Door, a shabby-chic dining room complete with brown banquettes, funky retro lamps and art exhibitions. Friendly staff serve beer-battered fish with hand-cut chips ($13), and there’s a decent selection of beers and a good little wine list; bottles are offered with about a $10 markup.
