Bar Italia

Open since 1987, Bar Italia is still one of the city’s favourite hangouts. Sit yourself down under the skylight at the marble-topped counter. The College Street hot spot has just four beers on tap but offers a wide-ranging wine list (22 reds and 13 whites), with many available by the glass ($7–$15). Soak up the booze with a plate of simple, tasty snacks: bread and olives, or one of the bar’s famous panini, filled with chicken, cold cuts or, in the case of the legendary Cubano, roast pork, pancetta, avocado and garlic mayonnaise ($11). Once summer is over, there is live music on the weekend and remixed jazz and other subtle beats throughout the week. The second-floor bar is open Friday and Saturday.
