Bar Italia

Open since 1987, Bar Italia is still one of the city’s favourite hang-outs. Sit yourself down at the gorgeous marble-topped counter, crowned with a skylight. A wine bar in all but name, the College Street hot spot has just four beers on tap, but offers a wide-ranging wine list (18 reds and 12 whites), with many available by the glass ($6–$12). Soak up the booze with a plate of bread and olives, or one of the bar’s famous panini, filled with chicken, cold cuts or, in the case of the legendary Cubano, roast pork, avocado and garlic mayonnaise ($10). There is live music on the weekend and remixed jazz and other subtle beats during the week. The second-floor bar is open Thursday through Saturday. Closes at 2 a.m.
