Through a quirk of history, the Junction was a dry district for most of the 20th century. In 1997, its citizens voted to bring back the booze—Axis was a pioneer in bringing nightlife to the neighbourhood. On the sidewalk patio, you can stare triumphantly over your pitcher at the sober parishioners attending the Baptist church opposite. Inside, the exposed-brick walls occasionally double as a gallery for local artists. In addition to conventional events (Tuesday wing night, Thursday karaoke), Juno-winner Julian Fauth plays blues on a battered upright piano (over brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekend) and there’s an open jam on Tuesday. The food is a mix of standard pub fare plus the requisite Asian additions; the usual Canadian, Irish and Belgian suspects are on tap.
