Despite winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1999 for best drama, Margaret Edson’s first play remains her only fully realized work (her second piece, Satisfied, has yet to be produced). Edson drew on her experiences working as a clerk in the oncology and AIDS wards of a hospital to write the story of Vivian Bearing, a university professor in the late stages of ovarian cancer. Vivian uses her formidable intellect—she is an expert on famously difficult 17th-century poet John Donne—to get through the experience, but as the teacher becomes the student, it’s her humanity that ends up being her most important tool. Barbara Larose directs.—Stéphanie Verge
