Attempts at obfuscation and subterfuge—in the form of false engagements, blackmail and tall tales—leave an inheritance, a woman’s honour and a young couple’s love hanging in the balance in William Congreve’s masterful Restoration piece. Rarely has trickery been this amusing, thanks in great part to a collection of indomitable female characters and their cheekily named entourage (Foible, Waitwell, Wilful and company).
