Soulpepper has done undeniably well with Chekhov’s 1899 play about wasted opportunities. Part of the company’s 2001 and 2002 seasons, the already complex version has likely grown deeper with the passage of time. The main players from the previous productions revisit some of the Russian’s great roles: downtrodden estate caretaker Vanya (Diego Matamoros); his awkward, lovesick niece (Liisa Repo-Martell); his unattainable sister-in-law, Elena (Kristen Thomson); and the local doc Astrov (Albert Schultz). László Marton directs. Previews June 5.—Stéphanie Verge
